थ्री स्टोरी Topics

Students who are about to graduate or are close to it are always complaining that after they receive their degrees, the options on what are available are very limited. Some students have no idea what they will be doing. The college has an internship office that offers students opportunities that may set them up with their next career or a large stipend of money to get their lives started. The career office at the college helps students as early as sophomore year with figuring out what they would like to do with their lives. Is the student’s uncertain attitude about their future really the college’s limited amount of available tools or the lack of effort put forth by the students?

Sources: Tinesha Ross is a senior who will be graduating next semester and will be accepting an internship at Albany but she did receive the information of the internship from the school.

Simon Okra is also a senior figuring out if he wants to go to law school and has complained about the lack of help he is getting in figuring out his future.

A next article could be about the life and times of a John Jay Security Guard. What does the job entail? Are there in really in any danger and what do they think about their job. What will happen if there was really a possibility of a treat at the college? Do the students feel safer when they have the guards? I plan to choose a few workers and record what a typical day is for them. I will try to find out who are their bosses? Are their any images that people may have of them and can the title do anything for them in the future.

A new sense of school pride can be seen in the classrooms and through out the hallways but in the form of John Jay apparel. The John Jay logo and name can be seen on hats, hoodies, sweaters, shorts, t-shirts, not to mention school supplies. They come in multiple colors from pick, baby blue, to green and it is one of the newest things this year for student to wear them. However, is there actually a sense of school pride going on or are these school apparels just a passing fashion statement. Most of the apparels don’t even come in the school’s colors which are blue and gold.

Source: Brad Demarco works at the John jay Barns and Nobles Bookstore which is the top seller for John Jay apparel.
I could interview students that have shopped at the bookstore and have used their actually money to pay for school apparel instead of using financial aid.

I think the topic about the graduating seniors would be interesting. I also, think that you would need to get a perspective from the professors and the people that work in the offices that you describe. To my understanding these is use to accomdate undergraduate students.

Kevin . . . do the security story if you can pull it off. I think it sounds great. It's too early in the Fall to do the "senior" story. You need to get student' perceptions of the guards. Talk to them about what their jobs actually entail. Maybe interview one of the guys girls who works the night shift? This could be your scene. Do you know any of them? There's on in my other class. I'll put you in touch. DH

You need to talk to their supervisors as well to get some depth etc. How hard a job is it to get? What does it pay? Does it help them land security/law enforcement jobs down the road? It seems "prestigious," but, at the same time, a lot of students are annoyed by the guards. So there's lots to explore here. DH

I like the first idea, its effects everyone who is in college. What if I graduate with a BS, and I dont know what I'm going to do with it. You should find professor who have a major in something and do something else, like Prof. Remeza, he's a english major, who went to law school, but now teaches and produces films. I think he is a prime example of expressing that one is not bound to a specific job because of their degree.

I think that the story about the choices that the school offers to students that are graduating is a very good idea for a story; however, I think that it would go better as the General College Article rather than the John Jay specific article as it can apply to a myriad of colleges and students.

The John Jay security guard is a good second for the John Jay specific article. I think this one will do very well.

All your ideas are great but you should really write about the security guard. I think if you focus on writing about one student who is a security guard and all the other issues you mentioned and how they affect him, it would be a great story. Try to include a lot of details of the setting and about him. Just in case you can't do this story, I think you can write about the first idea.

well i think your ideas are highly relevant, i think the most important one is the first one, because all students will like to know more about something that will help them, especially seniors or earlier students who think and plan ahead.
